Kenyan to be Knighted!!

History will soon be written the Kenyan way as Prof Shem Oyoo Wandiga is all set to be Knighted for his tribulations in the field of chemistry and chemical sciences.

The University of Nairobi professor, will travel to Buckingham Palace to receive the Knighthood from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England.

The news of his being knighted coincides with his admission as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

But contrary to reports he is not the first African to fly the continents flag.

Meet Sir Sam Jonah from Ghana who was knighted in 2003(Thanks to Angela Angwenyi of Classic FM, who brought this to our attention).

Sam Esson Jonah, the CEO of Anglo Gold Ashanti, began as a shovel boy, in the pits of the company's only mine at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, 41 years ago. He rose to become chief executive of the company and was knighted by the Queen for his leadership in the industry.

In 1984, at the age of 35, Sir Sam became the first black person to head Ashanti Goldfields since its establishment in 1897.

One of his major achievements since then has been to Africanise management positions, which had previously been entirely dominated by Europeans.

The other achievement was to transform Ashanti Goldfields from a one-mine company into an international gold producer that is listed on major stock exchanges, including London and New York.
